How to Fix "Windows Not Responding" Error 🛑💻

Screen frozen? Mouse stuck? Important Excel sheet open but nothing is clicking?
Don't pull the power plug yet! Here is how to safely unfreeze your PC without losing your work.

Why Did Your PC Suddenly Freeze?

  • RAM Overload – You opened too many heavy Chrome tabs or PDF files at once.
  • 💥 Driver Clash – An outdated graphics or mouse driver suddenly crashed in the background.
  • 🧩 Corrupted System Files – Windows is trying to read a broken file and gets stuck in a loop.
  • 🌡️ Overheating – Your laptop's fan is blocked, and the processor paused to prevent melting.

Updated 2026 – Save your unsaved client files before it's too late!

Immediate First Aid (Do This Right Now)

1. Give it 60 Seconds ⏱️
Sometimes the processor is just catching up. Take your hands off the keyboard and mouse. Clicking repeatedly will only flood the system with more commands and guarantee a crash.
2. The Task Manager Rescue 🚑
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc simultaneously. If Task Manager opens, find the app that says "Not Responding" (like Chrome or Excel), right-click it, and select End Task.
3. Restart Windows Explorer 🔄
If your entire taskbar and desktop are frozen: Open Task Manager, scroll down to find Windows Explorer (it looks like a yellow folder), right-click, and select Restart. The screen will flash, and your PC should wake up!
4. The Graphics Driver Reset 🖥️
If the screen goes black or completely freezes, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. You will hear a beep and the screen will blink. This instantly restarts your graphics driver without closing your apps!

🔧 Permanent Fixes (To Stop it Happening Again)

If your PC freezes every single day, you have a deeper system issue. Apply these fixes once your PC is running normally.

5. Run the Magic "SFC" Scan 🪄
Press the Windows Key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Type exactly: sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Windows will automatically find and repair corrupted system files causing the freezes.
6. Check Your Hard Drive Health 💽
If your disk usage is constantly at 100% in Task Manager, your drive is failing. Open Command Prompt as Admin and type chkdsk C: /f /r to repair disk errors. (Note: This will ask you to restart the PC to run).
7. Install Pending Updates ⬆️
Microsoft regularly releases "Cumulative Updates" specifically to patch freezing bugs. Go to Settings > Windows Update and click "Check for Updates."
8. Check for Thermal Throttling 🌡️
If your laptop is burning hot to the touch when it freezes, it is protecting itself from melting. Keep your laptop on a hard, flat surface (not a bed or pillow) so the vents can breathe!
